The National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) traces its roots back to 1918 when Sir Robert McCarrison established the ‘Beri-Beri’ Enquiry Unit in a modest laboratory at the Pasteur Institute in Coonoor, Tamil Nadu. Over the course of seven years, this unit evolved into the “Deficiency Disease Enquiry” and by 1928, transformed into the fully-fledged “Nutrition Research Laboratories” (NRL), with Dr. McCarrison serving as its inaugural Director. In 1958, the institute relocated to Hyderabad. In 1969, marking fifty years of its establishment, the institute underwent an official name change to become the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN).
